quilt finish with liberty fabrics

Over the weekend, I have finished the levitating jewel box quilt #2. There are a few first times with this quilt:

  • first time quilt with Liberty London fabrics – Tana Lawn Cotton
  • first time quilt using wool wadding
  • first time quilt using IKEA Bomull calico for the backing

I have a positive experience using tana lawn cotton fabrics by Liberty London for quilts. The fabrics are very thin, or better said ultra fine, but they are not as delicate as I thought. The tana lawns are strong and durable. When touching a tana lawn fabric, it feels like silk. And also has the same properties as silk: cooling in summer and warming in winter.

I have quilted this piece with straight lines on the quilt diagonal. As usual, I have used the walking foot. The wool wadding is higher and loftier than a cotton one, but was easy to quilt. At first I was afraid that I did not use enough basting pins. That the entire sandwich would move when quilting, but there was no problem at all. The stitching went straight forward, the top and backing fabric didn’t move at all.

I also used the same background fabric for the binding. This avoids distraction from the nice and colourful tana lawns and the quilt pattern.

As mentioned above I have used the Bomull unbleached calico from IKEA as the backing fabric. The fabric width is exactly what I needed, and the colour is a natural beige.

For piecing the top, I used Aurifil Cotton Mako 50/2 colour 2000 light sand.

I took the last photo in this post late afternoon; the sun was already going down. But this photo shows well the wadding loft.

levitating jewel box quilt #2

In my earlier post, I have shown you my #1 levitating jewel box quilt top and shared the quilt design process. I have mentioned that I want to make two complementary quilts. The first one has grey fabric (Kona Solid in silver) for the background. The second one is with a warm light beige (Kona Solid in Eggshell) background fabric.

I finally pieced the top and prepared a quilt sandwich. I use the ironing board to pin rows or longer quilt top sections together. I can raise the board higher than “normal”  table height. And I do not have to bend over when pinning the sections together. And do I use a lot of pins!

For these two quilts, I decided to use wool wadding for two reasons. 1) to try out something new (to me) and 2) cotton wadding is not warm enough for me. I have ordered at Cottonpatch a king size of Quilters Dream Wool. This wool wadding is very soft and it is higher than the cotton one. It was a pleasure to prepare and pin the quilt sandwich.

I will quilt both quilts using the walking foot in diagonal lines. I have marked the lines using a long ruler and a Hera marker.

Not yet sure if I need to add some more stitching between the marked lines. I am not keen on dense quilting and I can always decide later if the quilt needs more stitching.

Thanks for visiting and happy quilting!

no quilting in sight

Well, I think my sewing machine is getting rusty, just standing on the table for the last six weeks with no movement at all. In the meantime I went to visit my mum in Prague and also visit the Prague Patchwork Meeting. I go there for several years now, but I haven’t seen the event so full like this year. I was trying to take some photos of the wonderful quilts on display, but after a while I gave up. It was totally impossible to take an “only quilt” photo. Visitor crowds were found in all sections of the location, well distributed between the quilt exposition, fabric and template shops or stands with sewing and quilting machines. This time I had a close look on the Bernina stand. I  got detailed information about the high end sewing machines and could try my sewing and quilting skills. What a luxury, something to dream about! I think I must start saving for a Bernina 770 QE.

The Easter here in Spain was very cold and extremely rainy. But I was lucky to attend a golden wedding anniversary in Germany and we had the most beautiful Easter weather since years. The few days I spent near Bonn were a real retreat.

Two weeks ago I went to Alicante to visit a patchwork exhibition of the clubs in the Alicante, Murcia and Valencia regions. It was located in the old building of the Alicante railway station. So many nice quilts to admire and there were also about 20 fabric and patchwork shops. In the center there were tables and chairs so that the clubs could spend a day together working on craft and sewing projects.

sneak peek – levitating jewel box quilt

Since I have received the Liberty London fabrics I was thinking about a quilt design. I knew I wanted to make two quilts, one for my husband and the other one for me. The choice for the background fabric was easy : Kona cotton solid in silver for my husband and Kona cotton solid in eggshell for my quilt.

On the following sheet you can see the quilt design evolution. These are not all designs I was playing with, but you can see the direction going towards the final quilt design.

Butterfly charm block paper piecing – this is the link to free paper pieced butterflies  designed by Nicole from lillyella. I was also thinking integrating a few butterflies into the quilt design. At the end I decided against – so many tiny pieces, maybe next time, need more FPP practice and patience.

My final design decision : the jewel box blocks look as they are levitating over a silver background. This design (in my eyes) is lighter as the one with only blocks quilt design without any borders.

So far I have pieced the silver version. I shall post more details about the jewel box block and quilt size shortly.

liberty wheel placemats

This April my sister-in-law and her husband are celebrating their golden wedding. She asked me to make her two quilted placemats to celebrate this special anniversary. I choose a simple wedding ring pattern and I knew that I wanted to use my “new” Liberty London fabrics.

liberty wheel placemats 5 - skalabara quilts

The background fabric is from Makower Linen Texture in cream. The pattern template is from Teresa Down Under : Sewn Up, blog post Improvisational Paper Piecing.

I traced the middle ring by hand reusing paper with incorrectly printed out templates. Instead of improvisational piecing of the middle ring, I folded the template into six sections. For each placemat I cut 24 squares 2,5″ x 2,5″; distributed the fabric squares into 4 sections and chain pieced the middle ring.

The pieced middle rings before and after cutting, after removing the paper template :

The finished placemats are oval shape – this is why I have cut out the concave pieces asymmetrically, adding 2,5″ on one side of the outer ring template.

All prepared for piecing curves :

The four blocks are ready to make a placemat.

I have decided to finish the placemats without binding, i.e. I have quilted only the top and wadding (no backing fabric) in straight lines using the walking in foot.

And the placemats in “action” :

After adding the backing fabric (Kona solid in silver) I have quilted two circles to bond the layers :
