wip – february 2016

It is exactly a year that I finished the Horizon quilt top. Since then it was waiting on the shelf for further procedure. I had the backing fabrics, but no time to make the sandwich and start quilting. This week I received a bulky parcel from Cottonpatch with a delivery of my favorite wadding : Quilters Dream Cotton Natural Select. So, no more excuses and I started today piecing the backing, got the wadding out of the bag, cleaned the quilt top from loose threads and finally (after a year) made the quilt sandwich.

This is what I have on the needles : knitting an easy triangle shawl for cool days in the winter or cool nights in the summer. I am using my last – fourth – ball of Drops Kid-Silk and I hope to finish it soon. The wool is a dream, at first I had to get used to the very thin wool, but now it’s OK. I am knitting on 47″ red lace circulars from Chiaogoo.

The only project that I have finished this week was a set of four chair cushions for my friend Jane. She has redecorated her house, red is her favorite color and she wanted some cushion covers to match her new curtains and table runners.

I’ll be linking this week with Lets Bee Social at Sew Fresh Quilts and Needle and Thread Thursday at My Quilt Infatuation.

That is all for today, happy quilting!

charm pack + 1

After finishing a few large quilts I wanted to make something much smaller. So what possibilities do I have? Mini quilts, place mats, table runners or pillow covers. I went for the last, bought a charm pack from Moda Fabrics Persimmon collection and a matching very light brown or dark beige solid fabric. I have not worked with charm packs yet, but I had an idea what I want to make. At the end I pieced 4 pillow covers with one charm pack and a meter of solid plus the fabric for the pillow backs. All pillow covers have slightly different sizes, starting from 16″ x 16″ and ending with 20″ x 20″. So here are the 4 different patterns for the charm pack pillow covers :

  • half square triangles
  • zig zag with half square triangles
  • hourglass
  • broken dishes

Why charm pack + 1? Easy answer – I needed 43 pieces of 5″ squares to complete the 4 pillow cases. As a charm pack has “only” 42 pieces I had to get one more square. I found a matching solid fabric on my stash. Bet that you cannot find the “extra” charm square!

I have made another 2 covers with blocks that I had for some time in my design wall. This one is Wonky Stars :

The last pillow cover is my favorite. I have made it with Kaffe Fassett fabrics and the drunkard’s path block. This baby stays at home on the sofa :

I have quilted the pillow cases with the walking foot in straight lines next to the seams. All pillow covers have a zipper closure on the back.

Photos of all pillow cases from the front and back before I send them together. Sorry about the colors, I took the photos on a late afternoon.

WIP and linking up with other blogs

Over the last week I have worked on a new quilt using my last purchased stash from Kaffe Fassett. I have always been fascinated with the burst of colors and patterns on all fabrics by this amazing designer. So now it is time to make a throw. This is WIP – up to now I have pieced the blocks together. The next step is to arrange all the blocks to a nice patchwork top, match the colors and fabric designs. Here a first impression:
