Summer of quilt finishes : yes, I have one quilt less from my to-do-list. Radiate quilt, that I have started way back in February, is now all done. This post is about work in progress.

For this quilt I have used different solids from my stock, mostly Kona fabrics. Background is in white and the accent color is a deep warm purple.

I quilted this top with the walking foot, following the block seams with a straight stich. I am not a friend of dense over all quilting, so I am happy with the result. Stitch in the ditch isn’t my favourite technique. Here I need more sewing practice to “bury” the stitches in the seam.

I have used for the backing the rest of the black and white duvet cover from IKEA with butterflies and beetles.

A few more shots of the quilt. The late afternoon sun had the right brightness to show the beauty and the colours of this quilt.

The binding is in a mustard shade, the same solid that is also in the blocks.

a train quilt for baby adam

A few weeks ago my mum asked me if I could make a quilt for a baby boy. A quilt for her friend’s great grandson, Adam. Little Adam is turning one this summer and a baby quilt would be the right gift. They gave me a theme: a pattern with trains.

I found a nice a pattern with a train motif, but it was too large. The quilt pattern is All Aboard by It’s Sew Emma and it is for a twin size or a wall hanging. I needed only a pattern for a baby quilt. So I “redesigned” the train block to the right size and added Adam’s name.

There are 4 train blocks, each block is 32″ x 10″ finished size. I have added background fabric to the top and bottom and the outer borders are 4″ finished.

The letter blocks are a free design over at Temecula Quilt Company. All Little Letters are easy to piece and have explicite instructions. The letter blocks are 4″ x 4″ finished size.

The background fabric is Kona Solid in Dove. This is a wonderful neutral shade that matches with the blueish color of the border and letters. This fabric from the Linea Collection by Makower in Duck Egg.

Rest of the backing fabric is also from Makower – Baby Jungle Alphabet (that I bought to make a dress).

Quilting is once more with my favourite walking foot. I used stich number 4 on the Bernina, a wavy pattern that I quilted 1″ apart.

Here photos of the quilt sandwich with lines prepared for quilting. I have marked the lines with Hera Marker from Clover. And I still prefer to prepare the quilt sandwich with basting pins.

I am going to visit my Mum in a few days and shall take Adam’s Train Quilt with me.

atmosphere quilt in grey and mustard

Atmosphere Quilt is a pattern by Lee Heinrich. The pattern includes instructions for two color options : rainbow colorway and minimalistic colorway. Lee wrote this pattern as a professional and all instructions – both cutting or piecing – are easy to follow.

As you can see I have chosen to make the minimalistic – or neutral colorway. I have made this quilt as a present for a dear friend that has a stone decoration wall with exactly these colors.

My color choice is simple. Two Kona Solids in Silver and Mustard (the lighter hue) and two Bella Solids in Etching Slates and Mustard.

I have altered the color distribution in the pattern, in the ribbon row. Instead of using only the darker mustard for the entire row, I have changed one unit for an Etching Slates grey. I have also made diamond in square blocks instead of piecing many flying geese units.

The backing fabric is from my stock. Fabrics that I bought or got as a gift by the owner of my local quilt shop before closing because of retirement. Backing fabric is from Makower Linea Heron Grey.
