a set of quilted placemats in pink

2022 – here we go! I have started this year with a small project – two placemats for my dear neigbourghs. A little late Christmas gift. But here in Spain, the Three Holy Kings bring the presents on the eve of 6th January. And I have made it till the 6th, so it is officially a Christmas gift.

Got out my pink scrap basket and a piece of Kona Solid in Ash for the background. I have made some calculations about the size of the placemats and the individual pieces. The pink units are cut 5″ square and finished 4,5″ square.

The borders in the center – between the pink units are 1″ finished size (cut 1,5″). The outer borders are a bit wider : 1,5″ finished size (cut 2″).

I have pieced altogether 12 pink scrappy units and divided them into two piles – for two placemats. When deciding on the placemat layout, I have rotated the units by 90º. So that three units are in vertical and three units are in horizontal direction.

Quilting the placemats was straight forward : stiches on the diagonal, each line is 3/4″ apart. This fairly dense quilting leaves the placemats nice and flat after washing in the future.

Quilting thread is a 40 wt cotton Silk Finish by Mettler in light gray. Stitch length is 4 mm.

For the backing I have used the calico bought in IKEA – Bomull, an unbleached 100% cotton fabric. On the back you can see better the quilting lines.

I have used two different pink solids for binding the placemats. Both are Kona Solids – one is Bright Pink and the other Medium Pink.

This is all for the moment, I have some small projects on the table. Happy quilting!

placemats for andrea

During the corona lockdown times, I have more time for sewing and quilting. Andrea asked. If I could make her a set of placemats. Something geometrical, maybe triangles. And in her her favourite colours : blues, pinks, purples and turquoise.

placemats 5 - skalabara quilts

I have seen this pattern some time ago on Craftsy/Bluprint, and saved this project for later. The pattern is by Jess Toye and the name is Thirty-Two Carat Paper-Piecing Pattern. I loved the design, and this is the right pattern for Andrea’s placemats.

Jesse has written the pattern instructions very well. In the pattern she explains both cutting and paper-piecing steps. Jesse has also included in the pdf file a few project ideas with this paper-pieced block. From placemats to a king size quilt and with different color options. Thanks to my fabric on stock, I could choose the (hopefully) right colours for Andrea.

placemats 4 - skalabara quilts

Quilted with the walking foot in straight lines, 1/2″ apart. I have used quilting cotton thread King Tut 40/3 from Superior Threads, variegated color 939

Binding is Kona Solid in Bright Pink. To attach the binding I have used Mettler cotton quilting thread 40, color 959.

The backing fabric is once more Bomull calico from IKEA, 100% unbleached cotton.

pineapple mini quilt

As you know I am a big fan of all quilt patterns designed by Elizabeth Hartman. So I decided to make for my sister-in-law a table runner for her kitchen using the Pineapple Farm pattern.

christmas and quilting

Wow, hello everyone! I haven’t posted for some time, but this doesn’t mean I have stopped with patchwork or quilting. I have fully enjoyed my August holidays that I divided between 2 weeks in Prague and 2 weeks at home. I went back to work in September, both in the office and teaching patchwork and quilting.  September was filled with visitors that came to see us after the hot months of July and August.  With October nearly over I am slowly getting back to my normal routine.

Never the less I have worked in the meantime on a few small Christmas projects :

A lady from my quilting classes send me a photo of a table runner with this design that she liked on Pinterest. As there was no pattern on the web, I started cutting fabrics and piecing until I got all the measurements right. It is a straight forward design, a table runner that you can make in an afternoon.

I found this pattern for place mats and a matching table runner in a quilting magazine, but can’t remember which one it was. It is quick and easy design with appliqué.

mini quilt version #II

Below is a photo of version #I of the mini quilt. But I wasn’t satisfied with the design, I thought that the Christmas tree glass ornaments and the present boxes turned out too bulky. So I refined the design – see the photo above with version #II.

2015 in quilting

As 2015 is slowly, but steadily coming to an end, I have sorted my stash, cleaned up my sewing room and I am already back home from my trip to Prague.

So this post is all about 2015 finishes – a photo journal of my quilting year 2015. Lots of pillow covers and a few quilts.
