My submitted blocks shall be featured on The Modern Quilt Guild on the 14th, 17th and 19th September.
I am really happy about it, there are so many nice blocks. It will be hard to choose the few blocks for QuiltCon Raffle Quilt. Elizabeth Hartman of Oh, Fransson! is doing this. The other ones shall be used to make quilts for the Austin Children’s Shelter. A very good idea!!

Yesterday I started with the free-motion quilting and today I finished the good piece with binding.
I tried the loop quilting pattern and I am happy with the result.
One more thing : take out the basting pins well ahead when machine quilting. I wasn’t very careful at one point and here is the result :
Don’t ask me how I did it. Thanks God nothing happened, but imagine when the needle breaks and doesn’t stay in the pin. Normally I never sew over any pins when piecing, this has worked well for me.

This week I wanted to finish my Avenue Loop quilt, but I wasn’t in the mood to work on a large quilt. Saturday I decided that it is the right time to carry on with work and prepare a quilt sandwich. To my surprise I did not have enough batting. Now I have to wait for another week till the shop opens after holidays. Since I haven’t been on the sewing machine for some time, I really wanted to work and make a smaller project (to fit in my rest batting). I found a nice quilt tutorial at Hyacinth Quilt Designs called Sanctuary Squares. I downsized it and used fabrics from the collection Freshcut by Heather Bailey. As solids I chose a bright fuchsia and aqua in light blue/green. The top as well as the backing are now ready, tomorrow I shall make the quilt sandwich. I tried to take a photo this afternoon, but we always have wind – so everything was moving.
Still thinking about the quilting pattern and I am looking forward to finish it. Anyway, the best part with each quilt is binding (at least for me). And I hope I can bind this one later this week.

Since the temperatures are up to 37° C it is wise to stay inside and stick my nose in the last batch of books I have received. I am absolutely smitten with the Free Motion Quilting with Angela Waters : Choose and Use Quilting Designs on Modern Quilts.
Very descriptive explanations of various quilting patterns, this is now my “quilting bible”. I have practiced some of the patterns on scraps. My absolute favorite is Seafoam – combination of 2 patterns: Concentric Circles (this one I need to learn) and Pebbles (this one I am practicing).
Yesterday I have started quilting the sandwich I made before I went to Prague. I decided to combine the patterns pebbles and waves. I shall only quilt the white fabric (background) and leave the color rectangles to float – as the quilt’s name is Floating Colors. When I read the book I also noticed that Angela’s favorite thread is a 50-weight polyester So Fine by Superior Threads. I like to follow experienced advice and I have ordered some more thread at Barnyarns in the UK. Here a quilting detail from the backside.
So far free-motion quilting. In the meantime I finished a dog quilt . The design caught my eye whilst browsing the world-wide web. I loved the photos and I also found the author of the pattern: Boo Davis and the quilt I’m a Wiener Baby Quilt is from here book Dare to be Square. Since I have ordered sooooooo many books over the last few weeks, I decided to make the quilt just from the photo. I went through my stash and found enough material from the collection Innocent Crush from Anna Maria Horner. I think the result was worth while calculating all these cutting dimension from the various fabrics.

Today was entirely dedicated to quilting. I have pieced the top during the week and yesterday I could finally prepare the sandwich. All fabrics with pattern are from Kaffe Fassett. I always wanted to make a quilt using his wonderfully designed fabrics.
I decided to finish this quilt with both free-motion and straight line quilting. The hourglass block literally invites you to quilt with the walking foot, this one is in diagonal. I was wondering how I could highlight the BABY part. After looking on the title page of the book Quilting Modern, I decided to try the pebble quilting. It also matches the fabric pattern that I used for the letters BABY. Pebble quilting is a new technique for me and I enjoyed learning something new. Here the result :

I have used different colors of quilting threads. Yellow for the top and yellow/orange variegated for the bottom of the letter part. For the hourglass block part I have used red/orange/lilac variegated thread. And for the double folded binding in pink I have taken a matching color.
