quilted cushion covers « skalabara quilts

In my last post of 2020, I have shown you my quilt throw Spinning Windmill. With the new year here, I have used the “cut-offs” from this project to make three different quilted cushion covers.

The half-square triangles come from the flying geese units – I have used the stitch and flip method. Whilst piecing the flying geese units for the quilt, I have sewn the half-square triangles.

I have also finished a cushion cover with a star motif. Originally I wanted to use this block as an extra block for the Summer Sampler 2020 Quiltalong. But at the end, I have used a different design to finish the quilt. Find the pattern for the wonky star block here.

This time I have combined different stitches to do the quilting on the cushion covers. From the back you can see better all the stitching on the calico fabric.

I have used a new thread type that I have bought – it is silk-finish cotton in 40 from Mettler (Amann Group), color 0331 light grey. It is a great thread, very smooth and shiny. Ideal to use for all quilting projects.

For the back side of the cushion covers, I have taken a nice paisley pattern fabric in black/white/grey hues. I have finished the cushion covers with an envelope closure on the back. With double fabric – the paisley pattern fabric and the calico on the cushion interior.

It has been some time since I have finished the Atmosphere Quilt, a pattern by Lee A. Heinrich. But only now I have made 2 matching cushion covers to the quilt. As this quilt is a gift for a good friend, I thought some extra cushion covers would be nice.

I had so many half-square triangles left over from piecing the Atmosphere Quilt top. I had them all in a box and this box I have had many times in my hands to through the tiny pieces away. But somehow I always resisted and left the box content for further use.

The block pattern Broken Dishes is on the lower cushion cover. The pattern on the top cushion cover happened as a mistake. I rotated one unit when piecing the half-square triangles. And I liked the pattern, so I used it to make the other cushion cover.

The half-square triangle blocks are 2″ x 2″ finished, i.e. each half-square triangle unit is 1″ x 1″ finished. I have added borders to make the cushion covers 20″ x 20″.
