weekend in orange shades – more cushion covers

The Horizon top is ready to quilt, but instead of starting working on a large throw, I decided to make a set of 4 cushion covers for my Mum’s neighbor Eliska.

Eliska was a big help for my Mum when she broke her arm and could not cook. Eliska made for her all warm meals over a period of 6 weeks. These cushion covers are for the sofa in her kitchen where all cupboards are in orange. I made my “classical” set of cushion covers using half-square triangles. But my favorite stays the hourglass block. I selected a strong orange quilting thread from Mettler. First I had out an off-white quilting thread but the orange is more visible.

On the above collage you can already see the backing fabric. I have sewn 4 backs with a zipper closure. I use this tutorial from Riley Blake.

All photos have a bit different colors. We had very variable weather over the weekend, starting with blue skies and sun, getting cloudy and today we have strong winds and some rain. All photos were taken this time inside, outside the cushion covers would fly away.

wip – february 2016

It is exactly a year that I finished the Horizon quilt top. Since then it was waiting on the shelf for further procedure. I had the backing fabrics, but no time to make the sandwich and start quilting. This week I received a bulky parcel from Cottonpatch with a delivery of my favorite wadding : Quilters Dream Cotton Natural Select. So, no more excuses and I started today piecing the backing, got the wadding out of the bag, cleaned the quilt top from loose threads and finally (after a year) made the quilt sandwich.

This is what I have on the needles : knitting an easy triangle shawl for cool days in the winter or cool nights in the summer. I am using my last – fourth – ball of Drops Kid-Silk and I hope to finish it soon. The wool is a dream, at first I had to get used to the very thin wool, but now it’s OK. I am knitting on 47″ red lace circulars from Chiaogoo.

The only project that I have finished this week was a set of four chair cushions for my friend Jane. She has redecorated her house, red is her favorite color and she wanted some cushion covers to match her new curtains and table runners.

pink quilt for a baby girl

This quilt is for a baby girl just a few weeks old. She is the granddaughter of my friend Joan. Last year when browsing on the net I saw this baby quilt at Craftbuds and I liked the design. Here my version :

When Joan asked me to a make baby quilt, I remembered the Citrus and Mint Baby Quilt. So I got out my pink fabrics and started. When I made the first layout just with the pinks I thought it would be nice to get in also a touch of yellow. The quilt I made is larger than in the Craftbuds post. I have altogether 80 blocks instead of 42. The quilt is approx. a cot size. I have worked with the same cutting directions : 6,5″ squares as well as 2,5″ squares for the corners, but I used double of the material.

Some details of piecing and pinning :

I decided to quilt it in free-motion with meanders as I do not want to get out of practice.

Binding is in a light fuchsia shade.

pink wave quilt

My first finish of 2016! Actually I started working on this quilt at least 2 years ago. I pieced the blocks and somehow I was´t happy with the colors. So I put the blocks deep back into my patchwork storage and forgot about them. The other day I was looking through my fabrics and dreaming of my new quilting adventures when I got across the “lost” blocks. And I remembered my resolution from last year : finish all UFO´s before starting new things!

So I pieced the quilt top together, opened a new packet of my favorite wadding : Quilters Dream Cotton – in select natural quality.

As the pattern is very straight forward I have decided to quilt it with wavy lines using the walking foot. Thread : Superior Threads King Tut #40/3 variegated color no. 961 canaan.

2015 in quilting

As 2015 is slowly, but steadily coming to an end, I have sorted my stash, cleaned up my sewing room and I am already back home from my trip to Prague.

So this post is all about 2015 finishes – a photo journal of my quilting year 2015. Lots of pillow covers and a few quilts.
