getting back to quilting

It has been nearly a month since my last post. Don´t know where the time has gone, but it was a busy time for me : my Mum was with us, had some challenging work at my daytime job and sorted out the garden before the summer heat arrives. Last Thursday (13th!) we have experienced 2 fairly strong earthquakes. One got me out of bed early in the morning at about 5:30 and the other one when I had my siesta after lunch. As our house is build on a rocky hill, we could really hear and feel the earth moving. Luckily nothing serious happened, only a few pictures in the house were hanging crooked.

The spring has come to an end : the first crop of figs is ripe on the tree (have to eat them before the birds spot them) and my favorite pot plants are in blossom – Agapanthus africanus alias African Lily or Lily Of The Nile. I just love the wonderful blue flowers. What a pity that they do not flower for a longer time.

Also all of my orchids on the windowsill are full with flowers. They are so easy-growing plants and give so much joy with their long-lasting flowers in all the different colors.

Talking about WIP : I have finally finished the “Squirrel” quilt that I started last year in November. The collection I have used is “The Birds and The Bees” by Tula Pink and some solids I had in my stock. The quilt size is 48″ x 60″, I have pieced nine patch and log cabin blocks together. Quilted straight line with the walking foot in diagonal. There are 2 panels with squirrels that gave the quilt its name : Meet the Squirrels.

My new project is with Kaffe Fassett fabrics. Somehow I can not resist his fabric designs and colors. Both packages have 20 different fabrics cut into 6″ strips – Happy and Blue; purchased at the Fat Quarter Shop. I have a quilt design on my mind, just need to do some calculating and hopefully I can start cutting later today.

That’s for now, thanks for stopping, Barbora

As it is Monday I am linking up with Lucy over at Charm About You for Plum and June’s Let’s Get Acquainted Link Up!

fire & ice quilt finished

It’s done : Fire & Ice quilt is finally finished! I have “cheated” a bit with the quilting. The last few quilts were in free-motion technique. So this time I decided to work with the walking foot. The wave or serpentine is a standard stitch on the Bernina 440. Never tried before, but I have seen some quilts with this finishing and I thought this would break the strict geometrical pattern.

The finished size is 60″ x 84″. I just love the blue tulips backing fabric from Fabric Freedom.

Happy quilting, Barbora

first qayg project finished – mary’s quilt

After a “lazy” winter, the work in my professional life has picked up. I have had a few busy weeks and there is no change in sight. So for the moment I had to reduce patchwork and quilting just to classes. I enjoy the classes very much, my lady pupils are wonderful and we have a good time together. We are working on a QAYG quilt, most of the blocks are now ready for quilting. Last week I have helped Mary to finish her quilt and decided to go for FMQ with meanders :

Here a detail of the QAYG seams that join the individually quilted blocks :

Maybe over the weekend I can work on the blocks of the Skill Builder BOM by Pile Of Fabric.

Happy sewing everyone, thanks for stopping, Barbora

another quilt finished : lollipop III and 2 pillow covers

Once more a very busy week not only at work but also on the quilting side. I have finished the Lollipop III quilt with 2 matching pillow covers. So instead of writing lots of words I shall post some photos :

Today I had a hard time taking a few shots, the sun was shining but the wind was quite strong and the quilt was very lively. Both other photos were taken indoors and the colors are a bit different.

a week with pillows

The last I was busy sewing different pillow covers – for a client, for my Mum and finishing the two swoon blocks also into a pillow cover. I decided for straight line quilting with the walking foot. Here the blue swoon :

It was pleasure making these blocks. Maybe one day I shall make a full size quilt.

Anyway, there was some more work for me : Mary asked me to help her finish the Star Gaze quilt. And so I did it, here is the quilt.

I have new projects on the way, more next time. Happy sewing, Barbora
